Al Bates
Al Bates is a South London based artist and textile designer, originally from North Yorkshire. Her work varies from large scale textile hangings to finely detailed paintings, exploring materiality, memory and domestic spaces.
Her textile practice is rooted in a hands-on understanding of materials and sustainable making. Combining techniques such as knit, quilting, embroidery and needlefelt, each technique leaves room for the next to use its offcuts, creating handcrafted, one of a kind artworks that leave nothing wasted.
Al graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2021 with a First Class BA Honours in Textile Design, specialising in print, and is represented by 8 Holland Street Gallery.
